Working
out of Burden of Proof Research Inc., Jeffrey Miller gives
readings, speeches, and workshops to groups of any size. Past
appearances have treated the business of writing and the writing
life; legal history; legal humour (including talks to specific
business or professional audiences about how the law relates
to their work or past-times such as sports, gardening, music,
and cooking); alternative legal careers; law and literature;
and translation and language.
Workshop on the legal rights and responsibilities
of writers
Miller also offers a popular workshop on the law for writers,
employing actual cases and documents to illustrate copyright
concerns for writers, how to negotiate better publishing
and agency contracts, as well as how to avoid contempt proceedings
and libel actions.
Fees,
etc.
As Miller makes his living exclusively by writing and presentations,
Burden of Proof usually requests fees for his speeches and
readings. Organizations that don't have a budget set aside
for speakers sometimes defray the cost by selling tickets,
which also can help with room-rental fees and refreshment
expenses.
Burden of Proof charges half-fee for Miller's readings from
his work, on the understanding that his books can be sold
and autographed at the function. Again, of course, the fee
can be defrayed by an admission charge or other audience
contributions to the cause.
